ONLY FOOLS RUSH IN…

Let’s turn the clock back and remember the greatest footy April Fools’ Day prank ever. Shoot magazine joined forces with the reds and blues to put one over on Scouse football fans everywhere… and we loved it. Remember that sense of humour? By Alan O’Hare.

On April 1st 1989 Everton and Liverpool were as far apart in the league as they had been for years. While the reds were neck and neck with Arsenal in a race for the title, the blues were still struggling to come to terms with Howard Kendall’s departure and staring down the barrel of mid-table mediocrity. But that didn’t stop the Merseyside giants from having a bit of fun, though.

In those pre-Internet days, football news was consigned to the (back page of the) newspapers and extortionate ‘clubcall’ phone lines. Rumours were always rife, but now and again, fans were taken by surprise with a big transfer. But nothing compared to the morning when readers of the massively popular Shoot magazine were confronted with the cover shot you see above…

It was brilliant. Don’t forget, there was no Google to confirm or deny the story. You couldn’t click into your favourite social media channel to see what everyone else was saying. It was just there in full colour: Ian Rush in an Everton top. Sure, you only had to turn to page seven to find out the truth (and read the worst headline ever: ‘Rush For Everton Neverton’), but the palpitations had started, no matter what colour your blood ran.

Would it happen today? No chance, we’re all too serious. There’d be an outcry on both sides of the fence – #disrespectful would be showing on the side of your feed before you could type ‘turn it in’. But, for a few shocking minutes back in 1989, Liverpool and Everton took the mickey out of both sets of fans with a sense of humour that has long since been lost.

By both the clubs and their fans. Happy April Fools’ Day…
