THREE FOR 30: OYE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

As part of Africa Oye’s 30th anniversary celebrations, the festival has announced three concerts to help get the party started.

First up, acclaimed South African cellist Abel Selacoe will be performing a joyful and life-affirming show in Birkenhead this month. The world premiere of The Oracle will see Selaocoe joined by Manchester Collective to present a musical journey that ‘spans continents and generations, past and future’. Known for their experimental programming and daring collaborations, Manchester Collective perform a combination of cutting-edge contemporary music, classical masterpieces and staged work to new audiences.

Then the party moves to Liverpool in May as, in association with Liverpool Arab Arts Festival, Somalia’s Dur-Dur Band bring their unique disco funk to town. Originating from the Mogadishu disco scene, Dur-Dur Band disbanded in the early 90s, as the country plunged into a civil war. They were unable to continue playing in their city and scattered abroad. Now, Dur-Dur are a time capsule, transporting audiences to the 1980s and the legendary Hotel Juba.

And then, following the 30th anniversary of Arfica Oye in June, Havana Meets Kingston for a summer party at the Phil on Hope Street, as unique and captivating collaboration brings together a dream line-up from Jamaica and Cuba, exploring the musical output of these two Caribbean islands. ‘Havana Meets Kingston’ marries high production values and top-notch musicianship to yield a unique and captivating set. Part of Africa Oyé’s 30th anniversary celebrations, this captivating collaboration will explore the musical output of the Caribbean islands. The project – returning to the UK after a stunning performance at the BBC Proms – honours both islands’ incredible musical foundations and legacies, melding Jamaican soundsystem and bass culture with Cuba’s electrifying and virtuosic Afro-Cuban and jazz traditions to create something entirely new.
