Jerry Dammers is in town this weekend and you can get up close and personal with The Specials legend thanks to Liverpool etc. By Alan O’Hare.

Jerry Dammers, founder member and principal songwriter of 2 Tone heroes The Specials, is DJing at a Writing On The Wall event this Satuday (May 21st) and we have two tickets to give away. Dammers is the very special guest DJ for the after-party of an event celebrating Afrofuturism, at District, this weekend. Inspired by the work of Afrofuturist artists, writers and musicians, Saturday’s all-day event has been devised by Writing On the Wall, Next Stop New York and Afrofutures_UK.

“It’s huge for us to be bringing Jerry Dammers to Liverpool,” said Madeline Heneghan, co-director of Writing On The Wall. “Jerry is one of the UK’s most innovative musicians and founder member of The Specials – one of the UK’s most iconic bands, whose music and attitude educated a whole generation about ska music, diversity and internationalism. Jerry’s DJ set will feature tracks from his extensive repertoire of ska-punk-dub fusion, to Sun Ra-inspired Afrofuture tunes, and will have the place bouncing all night.”

The event, which will also explore the work of artists such as Octavia Butler, George Clinton and Janelle Monae, will look at finding new ways to express the voices of those who have been marginalised and explore alternative technologies for creating new ways of co-existing. Jerry will then take to the decks to get the after-party started…
